School Consolidation Press Conference

It seems that the only town who can actually say they are now for the consolidation is Wise. St. Paul thinks they have an ace up their sleeve with the power plant, but I still have my doubts as to whether that place will ever generate even one kilowatt of electricity. Dominion has a pretty bad track record in virginia when is comes to building these things. I think there is one upstate that has been ready for a long time and still has not produced any. I may be wrong on that, but I don't think I am.

Now, on the note of the gym at Appy. They whole reason for the big push for this gym now is the fact that Appy's 8th graders will be going to the elementary school when the new schools are built; therefore, that creates the need for the gym. That is the biggest reason that the 8th graders were still going to the high school.

I've been against moving one school into another. I didn't want the money tossed down a hole. I don't like to think any school should have to close, but sometimes you don't have many good options. Wonder what will be done JIB once they hit the county schools?

I hope they join on in, seems like the best choice to me.

IDK if the power plant would help or not.....assumeing that it generats a but load of local tax money then the state will redo there allocation to WC efectavly dropping the states per student money allocation

You bring up a good point there Counts about the per student allocation. But the county has already sunk a ****load of incentives into that place that it would be a shame if it never goes online.

I remember way back in the late 70's-early 80's that TVA started building a nuclear plant in Phipp Bend. I was supposed to help tremendously with taxes and jobs for Hawkins county in Tennessee, but it got scrapped by Reagan. That place sat idle for years and is just now starting to show a little sign of life with some very minor industry. They even had a reactor transported there and it sat there forever. I think it is still there. Point is, that plant was supposed to be a savior for Hawkins county and it never happened. The same could happen to Wise county, too.

I had a close friend that lived about 5 miles from that site she told a differant story.....After Chanobal the backlash against building the plant was so huge that it was scraped (Al Gore leading the way)

I lived there very near it, before I went into the service and it was all because of Reagan saying that nuclear energy was not needed and he had it scrapped.

I had always heard that after Chernoybl, the plant in Hawkins Co. was scrapped because of safety concerns. I dont know whats true and whats not true, just what I had always heard. I have family in that area.

Chernoybl did not happen until 1986, the Phipps Bend was shut down before that happened.

Three Mile Island and Maxie Flatts ,Ky - then the fact that NONE of the long term storage sites ever came into being. There were also some big deals made about even transporting nuclear waste thru some areas.
